Saturday August 1st was the official Grand Opening of the new Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Hollywood and I had a chance to get a sneak peak!  The figures are spaced out throughout the building in such a way that you can walk up and put your arm around them or put on one the fun costumes and take goofy candid photos!  Either way – Super fun!

Downtown Los Angeles Lofts, Don’t Be Fooled

I have seen many “Apartment” buildings in Downtown L.A. trying to pass themselves off as “Lofts” recently.  Cookie cutter units with 8 foot ceilings and no imagination and indeed no actual “Loft” in the place at all.  Wikipedia defines a “Loft” the following way:

“Loft apartments are apartments that are generally built from former industrial buildings. When industrial developments are developed into condominiums instead of apartments, they may be called loft condominiums. The general term warehouse-to-loft conversions may sometimes be used for development of industrial buildings into apartments and condominiums. "Loft-style" may also refer simply to developments where a street-level business occupies the first floor while apartment "lofts" are placed above the first floor.

Sometimes, loft apartments are one component of municipal urban renewal initiatives that also include renovation of industrial buildings into art galleries and studio space as well as promotion of a new part of the city as an "arts district."

Originally popular with artists, they are now highly sought-after by other bohemians, and the gentrification of the former manufacturing sectors of large cities is now a familiar pattern. One such sector is Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The adoption of the Adaptive Reuse Ordinance (2001) in the City of Los Angeles (primarily the Arts District) is another example of such legislation to encourage the conversion of no longer economically viable industrial and commercial buildings to luxurious residential loft communities. Such is the demand for these spaces among the well-off that real estate developers have taken to creating ready-made "lofts" in urban areas that are gentrifying or that seem primed to do so. While some of these units are created by developers during the extensive and costly renovation of old buildings, a number of them are included in the floor plans of brand new developments. Both types of pre-fab loft offer wealthy buyers or renters the proximity to urban amenities afforded by traditional lofts, but without the perceived safety risks of living in economically depressed industrial areas. Detractors argue that these ready-made units are neither produced nor consumed in the spirit of traditional loft living.”

USC Apartments

Weather you are a freshman or grad student finding housing is always a challenge.  The first obstacle and often times the most challenging is the question of whether or not to live on or off campus.  Having an affiliation to a Fraternity or Sorority will make this decision an easy one.  Additionally you may have to take in to account other factors such as transportation and financial resources.  But for the lucky few who are both blessed with a vehicle and rent money, living off campus is more often than not the way to go.

L.A. Lakers vs. Magic at the Staples Center, Game 1

Game 1 of the NBA Finals will be played here in Downtown LA at the Staples Center. Reserve Lofts is near the Staples Center, only a few blocks away. If you’re fortunate enough to have tickets to the Finals, come by to tour our Luxury Live Work Lofts. We have a few penthouses lofts available for lease.

The thing about living here in Downtown, South Park District, everything is walking distance. You can walk to Ralphs, walk to the Staples Center, walk to ESPN Zone, or walk to the nearby bars to get some drinks.

If you’ve been to downtown Los Angeles recently, you’ll notice that a lot has changed. The energy is different because there are more people here that come to hang out, watch a game, watch a show at LA Live, get some drinks; they don’t just come here to shop on Santee, “The Alley”.

If you’re lucky you might even run into Kobe. Go Lakers!

Pedicures, Paper Shoes, and Sandwiches. Why This Valley Girl Has Fallen For Downtown.

toes

As a single mother of a teenage girl, not only do I seldom have time for the big things like hair appointments and happy hour, but I am forced to neglect the ever so important little things like pedicures and lunch with my girlfriends.  I have been doomed to a life of Facebook relationships and even more to my dismay doing my own toes!  Not anymore!

I recently started working downtown in the hip trendy Southpark district at the old Federal Reserve Bank on Olympic and Olive.  I live in Woodland Hills and if any of you are at all familiar with the West Valley, you already know that NOONE walks anywhere.  It’s not for a lack of energy or desire, it’s just that the Valley is built around the notion that you must pack your one child into your Hummer to go five miles to the nearest grocery.  You can imagine how elated I was to find a Ralphs within two blocks of my new job!  And restaurants, wow!  I had no idea how many great places there were within five minutes walking distance of here.  From your high end establishments to the down home downtown staples.

Which leads me to the pinnacle of my Southpark satisfaction.  Today on my lunch break, which lasts an hour, I managed to multitask like nobodies business.  Up one block and two over I met my girlfriend for lunchtime pedicures.  It was great!  We got caught up on all the current events, i.e. who’s dating who, leaving who, and who’s who.  I than put on my paper shoes provided by the manicurist and headed across the street to grab a quick delicious tuna sandwich, than back to the office.

Working at The Reserve Lofts definitely has it’s advantages!  I can just imagine how much more convenient my life could be if I lived here!
